Data Governance Implementation In Organizations: A Guide To Practical Actions

Effective Data Governance (DG) is essential to achieve strategic objectives, gain competitive advantages, ensure regulatory compliance, reduce operational costs and risks, and improve productivity. DG encompasses a framework of policies, practices, processes, and personnel aimed at structuring and managing information assets, improving management efficiency, data quality processes, operational efficiency, and the reliability of information supporting decision-making. However, many organizations lack a comprehensive and detailed understanding of the existing challenges and activities involved in their implementation. They usually have difficulty establishing actions and activities to implement DG according to their necessities. This research specifies a guide to practical and direct actions to help organizations implement DG. The main challenges and their impacts were identified through a literature review of case studies on DG implementation projects, supporting the construction of the Guide. The adherence to actions was validated by experienced DG professionals from organizations of varying sizes and market segments, involved in planning or actively conducting DG projects. The Guide to Practical Actions for implementing Data Governance includes 30 actions, structured into six domains of action and five implementation phases, describing the objectives, activities, deliverables, and roles involved for each of the actions. The Guide aims to help organizations realize the benefits of effective DG by overcoming challenges and mitigating their impacts, supporting an evolution in data use and management maturity, thereby enabling them to become data-driven organizations.
