Data Governance In Practice: Systematic Mapping of Literature On Applications and Implementation Approaches

Digital data is a vital asset for businesses, playing a key role in decision-making. Therefore, extracting value from these data as- sets is a challenge for the enterprise. In this sense, Data Governance (DG) is needed to manage data effectively and ensure data quality, compliance, and accessibility. This study employs the systematic mapping study (SMS) method of systematic review criteria to obtain an overview of the existing related research literature that addresses the principles and frameworks of the DG as well as practical applications and implementation strategies. The research synthesizes how data governance is applied in real-world contexts, identifying key approaches, challenges, and success factors. To achieve the objective of the investigation, we systematically searched three databases for articles published between 2014 and 2025 to understand the implementation strategies. This work contributes by mapping current practices on data governance, highlighting future research opportunities.
